Just purchased a very clean 86 Suburban with the 454 engine and 400 Turbo Tranny. Where can I specs about what rear end is on this VIN and other standard/options were added when new?

Finally, where would I find the towing capacity for the engine/tranny combo given I don't know what rear end it might have?

I purchased this vehicle exclusively to tow a 9,000 lbs boat 5 miles 4x a year, AND to put my 3 dogs in the back...

Plenty of room for the dogs, but, will it tow?

Thanks in advance.

You can go to the GM dealer parts department and have them print out the options your Suburban has with the use of your Vin number. The other would be is to look up the PRO codes you have. The Pro code sticker can be found on the inside of glove compartment.

Here is a link to the PRO codes to the year and model of your Suburban. http://www.compnine.com/research.php?arpo=1&rcatcode=52R&rpoyear=1986

Good luck and yes your Suburban has enough to tow all that you have mentioned. :D

Wow, that was fast and thorough!

Thank you very much for that!

So, I found the codes in the glove box and I had a few question.

1) The seller told me that this Suburban has the THM 400 turbo transmission. The code for that on the compnine website is M40. The transmission code in my glove box is MX1 which represents a 3 speed but makes no mention of the 400 turbo. On this and other websites, it just describes the tranny as “merchandised, auto, transmission. Additionally, there is no MX1 code on compnine. What gives?
