Where is the fuel pump on a 1996 GMC sonoma?

I am having problems starting my truck. We have tried to change the fuel filter but it is still not starting. It will start for a few seconds if we add gas directly to the carburetor. The fuse is not blown, we checked that, the next thing we can think is the fuel pump, but we know neither where it would be or how to tell if it is working. Please Help!!!! Thank you.

The fuel pump is in the gas tank. The entire tank will have to be removed and then the fuel pump assembly can be removed. But before you do that: The easiest test is to put a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail and see if the fuel pump can achieve about 45 PSI of pressure, that is what is required to start these vehicles.

You can also pull the bed (8 bolts) and some tailight wiring and the bumper and access the fuel tank and fuel pump and sending unit from above. Make sure to re-attache the ground for the FP near the bumper on the driver's side. Obviously, test the fuel pump first, after replacing the fuel filter.

Fuel pressure at the shredder valve should be 62 to 65 PSI with the ignition key on without the engine running, once the engine starts. The fuel pressure should drop around 5psi. Good luck and don't pour gas down the throttle body, it's been know for the gas to catch fire in the intake manifold and burn up the spider injectors which would be a costly repair.
