I am trying to find the grounds on my truck.

1996 GMC Sierra Z71 5.7

Please help! Haynes/Chilton books aren't showing it.

It's the Temp sensor you're looking for. They're very simple in how they read information actually, the thermostat is what regulates the flow of coolant throughout the engine and heater core. Your "thermostat" has no ground. I'm trying to find that gauge ground for you though, if it has one. The race car i work on is super simple, just the gauge and temp sensor. Don't know if the truck temp sensor is any different.

It should be just like GMC3500 says. The temp sending unit in the engine block acts like an adjustable resister. It's the rising and lowering of cooling temp causes the sender to increase and decrease resistance. The gauge reads this resistance. The ground connection to the block is made through the threads on the sending unit
