I'm trying to troubleshoot a noise I'm hearing while at speeds of 35-45mph. It's like a whining noise when accelerating only. No noise once I take the foot off the gas. It's hard to tell, but I think it might be coming from the rear? It's a 1994 suburban. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Solution

The issue is definitely the rear differential. Probably worn bearings. I changed the fluid and found a significant amount of metal shavings. Instead of trying to mess with the bearings, I'm going to just replace the whole rear axle.
