i have a 1993 GMC s15 jimmy, SLE 4x4, 4.3 vortec engine (W stamp on the block, which means more electronics and a few other things different than Z stamp)

one day on my way to a friends house, it stopped running. I have replaced spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap. The fuel pump still work, you can hear it buzzing and build pressure when the key is turned. the fuel filter was replaced just a few months before it stopped working. It turns over, but doesn't seem to be getting fuel or spark. Before it stopped running, i had been driving on what i thought but never confirmed by a mechanic was a bad EGR valve (i was told it was that by a friend of my dad who had owned multiple s10/s15 blazers/jimmys/trucks and he said the way mine was acting was the same way his acted when the EGR valve went out) but a bad EGR valve shouldnt kill it completly, merely make it run like shit.

i never heard anything flying around hitting the inside of my engine, any clanking, and from what i recall i dont remember hearing anything snap or break, it just all of a sudden sputtered out and died wile goin down the road.

any ideas? i would greatly appreciate anyones help/advice on the matter.. i am wanting to do it myself to keep from having my bank account RAPED by a mechanic.

check the Crank Position Sensor (or Camshaft Position sensor)

Well, i don't remember exactly what it's called, but I had the same symptoms, randomly dying engine, and failing to start at times.

Its a sensor under the distributor rotor, it sticks out of the side of the distributor with two wires coming from it.

Have you tested for spark? Take a spare spark plug and connect it to a plug wire, while holding the spark plug with insulated pliers, crank the engine, Does it spark? If not, possible bad control module inside distributor. Connect noid light to injector harness and crank engine, does noid flash? if not, computer is not sending signal to fire injector and or control module is dead. Look at ignition rotor, any burnt spots? it will appear black in a small area under the tower pick up for the coil. If burnt, replace rotor.
Just for your information, your not my type and I do not have rape on my mind, so get over it, were not all just after your money.

Start with checking for the DTC codes. Here is a link for you to retrieve the codes and we can go from there. http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/

The other things too that would cause your issue is a low fuel pressure, the fuel pressure in this system must be at least 58-63 psi in order to start the car. Other area is the EGR valve, these valves have been known to become clogged with carbon chunks there by keeping the pintles open when they should be closed. The last to keep in mind would be the CPI fuel system it self as failed and will need to be replaced, the CPI unit failing is a common problem. The injectors in the spider rails clog up and cannot provide enough fuel to start the engine.

Other are would be a bad ICM (Ignition Control Module) and that is located in the distributor under the rotor at the base of the distributor plate. Regardless, before your start to replace anything. Check to see what DTC codes you may have and start from there and keep me post for any codes and your fuel pressure at the shredder valve located on the fuel line at the back of the intake platinum drive's side by the distributor.

Good luck and be safe, well get your Jimmy running 100% again soon.
