I have a 1996 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3 V6. The battery is charged. When I turn the key to the start position it completely blacks out, key buzzer and all. Is it still possible that it is the starter solenoid shorting out even though it doesn't act like the electricity is making it that far.

You could have a faulty ignition switch, or faulty starter. Start with the simple and inspect your wire leads to your starter and stater solenoid. If you can have someone turn the key to start the engine, go around to the passenger side where the start is located and listen for the starter solenoid to make a clicking noise.

If you hear the solenoid click, then there is a good chance that your starter has gone bad or the wire leads need to be inspected more closely to ensure there is no corrosion damage to the starters wire harness. Good luck and keep us posted. :D
