I was considering trading, but now I've decided to keep my vehicle and buy a truck. Since I've wanted one of these style body of trucks since being a kid.
I recently came across one on the net. I called the guy and he said the check engine light is on, claims it is because of conversion to dual exhaust...and that if I put catalytic converters back on it would solve the problem. He told me they run about twenty bucks. How much would labor typically cost for this job. I don't want to end up spending hundreds of bucks to fix this.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening before, I've had trucks with dual exhaust and have never had this problem. Is this due to a bad install or another issue?
Also, which is better, GMC or Chevy for these years. Would love to hear from owners/past and present.
What are the things to check/have checked by a mechanic? Is there anyway of knowing hidden problems to the untrained eye/ear?

Truck stats:

1997 GMC Sierra ext. cab sport side 5.7 liter is a 350 right?
Anyway, price is 3,500 owner has said truck has 235,000 + miles on the odometer but engine was replaced and only has about 130,000-150,000 (of course I already know to get receipts if I decide to buy) he also stated that the transmission was rebuilt. Also, the engine has all new seals, does that mean it is on its last leg?
In all honesty I wanted one from the original or second owner. But it seems like these sport sides are hard to find.

Bottom line, should I pass this one up? Thanks to everyone who took the time to read and answer my question. You may just save me from making a huge mistake.

You can probably rent an OBD2 scanner or test drive it to an auto parts store and see what the codes are.

If the cats don't have sensors behind them, I wouldn't think that it would matter if they were on or not. If they did have sensors and he removed them, then it would set a code and turn the CEL light on.

I would do a little more investigating if it was me.

Hope this helps and good luck

Hello, hive! I have a 1999 GMC K1500 Suburban. When I step on the brake pedal, no keys in switch, the dash and marker lights come on. When headlights are off, driving normally, both turn signals work normally, but the dash and marker lights flash with right turn signal. When headlights are on, left signaL works normally, but right signal buzzes a little at the relay, but does not blink, even though the rear lamp does light on the right side. I am at a loss. So is my mechanic. Help??

How did all that work out?
I'm wondering about your preferred PSI for tires.
My mechanic recommended 32 psi for my heavily-loaded 1990 Vandura.
That's what I've used for years (once it was around 36-38, and that felt like I was on rollerblades and could not sense the road . . . ), yet I see videos saying that 32 is way too low and damages tires . . .

(I got 11-12 years out of my tires at 32 psi.)

Thank you for any helpful feedback!

I'm replacing a lower seat foam and leather. The lower foam is attached to a smaller metal frame and is then bolted to the main seat frame. At the rear of the foam/smaller frame there are 2 locating pins that must fit into holes at the rear of the lower seat before the 2 front screws line up with the holes to put screws in. I' not sure what to call them but I need at least 1, 2 would be better, help please.
