How do you know when a timing chain needs to be replaced on a 1997 gmc jimmy?

I have a 1997 gmc jimmy, and about 2 weeks ago, it began to start really hard and it seemed to bogg while driving . It was a minor bog, and I was still able to drive properly. I went out to start it this morning and it bogs right before it wants to start and does not start at all, and makes a small rettle noise. Could this possibly be the timing chain? How would I find out? Thank you

Could be the timing chain, but i'm leaning towards timing being off. If it's the timing chain, it would set the check engine light to come on and with your description. Sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem, which is a easier fix then a timing chain replacement. Start with your fuel system first, common for the fuel pump to go bad on our jimmy and the SCPI fuel injection system. There is an upgrade to convert the SCPI to a MPI system which is more reliable and can be picked up at Auto Zone or NAPA. Good luck and check your fuel pressure first.
