DRL is a common problem with them burning out a lot. This could be largely due to the fact that inexpensive common automotive bulb replacements are being used and then being in the "on" position for most of the time. To gain access to the DRL assembly, you must first remove the upper headlight assembly.
1. Open the hood and then approach the headlight assembly you need to remove.
2. Locate the headlight assembly retaining pins. They are located on top of the assembly on both the right- and left-hand sides. They are locked into the plastic grill/radiator cover assembly.
3. Turn the top of the retaining pins downward (towards you), either using a finger or a straightedge screwdriver, to gently pry it out of the grill/radiator cover assembly clips.
4. Pull straight up on the retaining pins once they're unlocked. You can now move the upper headlight assembly out from its cavity. Use the straightedge screwdriver to gently lift up on the wire harness locking tab connections of the high and low beam on the back of the headlight assembly. Remove the assembly and place it in a safe place where no harm will come to it. You will now have access to the lower DRL assembly.
5. Reach down behind the DRL assembly and place your hand on the DRL socket. Turn it counterclockwise 1/3 of a turn to release it from the DRL assembly. The bulb attached to the wire and socket can all be lifted up and away from the assembly to access the bulb removal.
6. Pull the bulb from the socket and then insert the new bulb. Testing the new bulb before reassembling the headlight assembly is tricky, especially if you're replacing the bulb in a garage or other indoor facility. Placing a shop light up near the ambient sensor--located on the center of the dashboard--may or may not work properly. If replacing the bulb outside, turning on the GMC truck will let you know if the bulb is working properly. Remember to turn it back off before reassembling.
7. Replace the socket into the DRL assembly and then align the offset notches to the daylight assembly. Turn clockwise 1/3 of a turn to lock the socket in place. Replace the wire harness connections to the headlight assembly. Reinstall the assembly and then reinsert the retaining pins. Be sure to lock them back onto place by swinging the tops upward into the seats. Remove the tools, old bulb and any other debris before closing the hood.
