Got a 1991 Jimmy S15 4x4. It's got the floor shift 4x4, NOT the buttons.

When I put it into 4x4, the little picture of the front axle lights up, but the indicator light stays on at 2 Wheel. How do I fix this?

Good chance that your front axle has not engaged and your still in 2wd. There are three area's for you to inspect.

1. The vacuum switch on top of the transfer-case drivers side which has three vacuum line. When you pull the leaver to engage the 4wd, a plunger in the transfer-case activates the vacuum switch allowing vacuum to the front axle Actuator.

2. The front actuator is located under the battery try and is a vacuum type of actuator. When vacuum is used to activate it, it pulls a cable that is connected to the front axle that engages a fork in the pumpkin. When the fork is engaged, there is a sensor that will indicate that the 4wd is working and is indicated on the floor panel that you are describing.

3. Inspect the vacuum line from the 4wd Vacuum switch on top of the transfer-case to the engine compartment. The vacuum line should go from the intake manifold, drivers side to the vacuum canister then to the 4wd vacuum switch.

More common for the vacuum switch to go bad, but in your case it's working. When that goes bad the 4wd will not disengage. I'ls start with inspecting the actuator under the battery try and then the cable it self if your front axle is not engaging. If it does engage, then inspect the 4wd indicator sensor on the pumpkin by the actuator cable.

Good luck and keep me posted, here is a link to your front 4wd system.

Okay, I'll check all this. I know it's engaging in 4wd, I can tell frrom the speed of (or lack of lol) 4Low, and in 4High the front end still churns and slips up my gravel driveway, but in 2wd it doesn't, so I know 4wd works, I just don't know why the light next to "2 Wheel" stays there when I shift into 4. Like I said, the picture of the front axle lights up when I put it in 4, and darkens when I put it in 2. It's just the other light that doesn't work
