AC compressor knocking

Is it possible to disconnect the compressor electrically and just let it free wheel? It only knocks on a "call" for cooling. I don't want to repair it if I don't have to

Yes you can disconnect the A/C clutch wire lead in the compressor, or better yet just don't turn on your A/C and your compressor will not turn on. You can also pull the A/C fuse from your fuse box if you like to keep the compressor from activating. ;)
