OK so my 96 Jimmy was broken into about 6 months ago and I lost everything from my head unit, to amplifier, to subwoofers. Well, to deter theft I purchased a stock radio from eBay. The GM part number is 16211095. Do these headunits generally play CD-R's? I have heard that they do, I just want to hear it from the "horses mouth" - so to speak.

Thanks,
Mark

MY stock head unit plays my burnt CD's and you do know you can still up grade your speakers and add an amp to give you the sound your looking for. I am still running a stock head unit in my Jimmy, but have up graded my speakers to component infinity and have two 10 inch bandpass box for bass being pushed by a Orion amp.

With this set up, it holds it's own to making noise. But looking through the window, all you see see is the stock AC Delco CD head unit:D

Good luck and hope this helps.

Thanks buddy... I think i am going to hold off on the goodies for now... lol.. but yeah I know I would need a Line out converter.. and would probably keep that cover stretched across the cargo area to conceal my stuff even further lol.

That's what i did and with the two 10 inch bandpass box, ran mixed mono. It makes enough noise that will hold up with 12's and 15 inch subs. Bandpass boxes are small and make large SLP, but there tuned. So your going to have to run the other speakers as components to get a well balanced stereo.

Good luck and keep us posted. ;)

Think i am just going to run factory radio with new speakers all around. Just buy what I need, dump it off at a shop and say "make it work". Lol. Think it shall sound better? There are some speakers that arent working - like passenger right dash and passenger rear door.

What speakers are in that vehicle anyways?

4x6 in dash
6.5's in front doors
amd 6x9's in rear?

Or am I wrong.

My Jimmy has the factory tweeters in the dash and there still decent, the hold there own with the set of 4 6.5" infinity reference speakers in the doors. The sound is amazing but when I play songs with more bass the door, and i wasnt aware that the rear doors on my Jimmy were 5.25 which would explain the hassle i had fitting the 6.5's in that spot. If you have a 2 door Jimmy, then yes you have 6x9 in the rear.

Good luck and hope this helps and a little FYI, not all 4x6 plates simply "drop in" on these 2nd gen trucks. I know that RF, Alpine, and Sony 4x6 plates need a little "tweaking" to make them fit. very little actually, but still not a complete drop in. I have tweeters in my dash, but some came with 4x6 speakers.;)

Are you running them off of the stock head unit? No outside amplifier?

Well I looked at the dash speakers... they're just one in tweeters mounted to some metal plates. WTF... Why is crutchfield telling me that a 4x6 will fit in therE?

You got the factory upgraded speaker system in your Jimmy, the standard system had the 4x6 in the dash. The system in your's is like mine which is a component where it's tuned with your door speakers.

Good luck and that's why i went with the Infinity component speakers in my Jimmy. ;)

Hey I have heard that some of the stock radios does not accept CD R's, if it works then it is your luck.

Well can't I just take the tweeter out and the plate it sits on and install a 4x6 in there? Drop-in?

And if not... why not? What is the model number of your deal? All I wanted to do was a simple speaker replacement all around for about 200 bucks! How dang hard is that to ask!!!!

Leave the tweeters in there and replace your door speakers. With 6.5 round speakers, but remember the rear doors are 5.25 so it will take some work to have the 6.5 speakers to fit in them. ;)

Your pick in the brand of speakers you would like to run. As mentioned i have the http://www.infinitysystems.com/car/products/category.aspx?cat=COS. Good luck and keep us posted. ;)

Why leave the tweeters? One is blown BTW. So yeah. That is why I want to replace them with 4x6's or even 4's. Any good place you know of to hide an amplifier to power the speakers int he truck without being able to be seen at all.. and without having to run that little "cover" across the cargo area. Under the seats and where the jack goes seem a little cramped.

Also... would I haev to put any in-line crossovers or bass blocks in between the deck and the after market speakers or are they integrated into the speakers already.

thanks

I saw these INFINITY KAPPA 60.9CS and I really like them. I want to run them off of the factory deck, but I don't think factory decks in our trucks are good for a 2 ohm load! Sad, because these speakers are VERY efficient as far as sensitivity rating goes, and require little power and good frequency response.

Also... If I were to cut the tweeters out and put 4x6's in would I have to install a bass blocker or crossover of any sort? Or are those generally integrated onto speakers now? A guy at the audio shop told me that the filter on the stock tweeters was fused to the tweeter.. but once the tweeter would be cut out, it would allow full range to go to those wires. Would I have to rewire in some filter or are there any integrated onto the speaker? Thanks again !LOL

Tweeters

Ok. so reading the forums I think that bggsm has close to the same questions I have. I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy SLS. I need to replace my front speakers. I have Tweeters in my Dash and the 6.5 in my Doors. if i purchase a new set they come with the crossovers. Is there a built in crossover already so i would just replace the tweeter w/the tweeter and the doors with the doors.. and not worry about any alternative wiring?

Thanx
