a couple months ago i bought two high mileage used tires for my 2006 envoy. the only problem was that they were a little bigger than the two on the back of the car. when a light snow hit and other cars were sliding off the road i reached down and put the transfer case into auto. the truck immediately started making clunking noises and i quickly turned it back to off. i replaced the bigger tires with the proper sizes and the truck seems to run fine. the only problem is now im looking for something to be wrong with the 4wd and i keep thinking i hear noises. i guess i just want to know if anyone thinks i did major or minor or no damage to my truck. thank you for any and all responses

Have your transfer-case serviced and see if they find any metal fragments in the fluid. Dropping it to 4wd with different tires will not be synchronized with one another and will cause the internal gears in the transfer-case to bind leading to major cost to repair (replacment).

If your lucky there is no metal fragments and the 4wd chain is just stretched and can still be used. It will just be loader then it should be and have lost some miles in to it's life span.

P.S you might want to read your manual on how to use the 4wd system to your Envoy. ;)

thank you

thank you will do. i did read the manual and know the operation of the 4wd. i have just owned older four wheelers and it didnt matter as much on them and i didnt even think about when i did this. i have been driving it a little with the auto setting and i think its doing ok but like i said i think im looking for something to be wrong. force of habit you know. but thanks for the post i will get it to the garage soon but i have to get passed christmas if u know what i mean

NO worries, it should be fine since you turned it off right away before you over heated the transfer-case from the gears and chain in the transfer-case binding. ;)

It was like you trying to change gears in a standard transmission without using the clutch.

thanks i would like to mark your name for future questions if i may

well i think i messed it up i put it in auto today and it sounded like it was slipping. no clunking but a bad slipping sound. so after christmas i guess i got to get it into the shop and have it looked at.

Good luck and keep us posted. Have a safe Christmas and there is a good chance that the clutch plates in the transfer-case may have gotten damaged.

Here is a link to your transfer-case internal parts. http://www.compnine.com/index.php?u...2000000823&capuid=1&majorgroup=04&grouptype=B
