Does anyone else have the problem with there gas gauge on a 2001 Sierra going to empty then full back and fourth when you fill up with gas? I wrote GMC about this years ago when it occurred. They told me it was a wear item and didn't feel it was there responsibility to fix it. I know a few trucks in my area with same problem. The dealer told me to hold off on fixing that there was gonna be a recall. But no recall yet and its been years. The big bright low fuel light is annoying at night for sure it almost blinds you. I just dont understand why they wont fix it.

i have an 01 too. the fuel sending unit trips out. when idling in park the gauge bounces back from empty to whatever the level is. it will stay on empty but when i shake the truck or start to move it goes back. and yes when i fill up or add gas it really goes nuts. from what i understand the fuel sending unit is built into the fuel pump so unless my pump or sending unit goes out completely i'm gonna let it ride. unless the put out a recall but i'm guessing their not going to.

Yes this is what mine does also. Mine has been like this for the last 90,000 miles. I was gonna get it fixed before but dealer kept telling me to hold out because there was gonna be a recall. But cant see them doin anything about it now. I just reset my mileage everytime I fill up.

How much does it cost to fix this? Or should I just wait till the fuel pump burns out? Thanks!

I have a 98 sierra and the gas guage is doing the same thing as described above. stays on full then to empty. never consistant. now im told to just gets the parts to fix it from N.A.P.A., its over 500 bucks and 300 for dealers price list to get parts.so i dont know anything about fuel cards ,but it's better then what i found out. Is a gas guage assembly this expensive?
