Winter has arrived and I am wondering what the "auto" position on the 2wd /4wd switch/knob actually does? Is it all wheel drive? or maybe it just turns 4wd on when it says "ice possible"?
Thanks in advance for your help.

In simple terms, AUTO switches to 4 wheel drive when is senses wheels slipping and will disengage when not needed. Its automatic but only based on what the system senses occurring with the rear drive wheels, slippage = AUTO engage 4 wheel drive. It won't' stay in 4 wheel drive in AUTO.
I drive my truck in AUTO all winter and only engage 4x4 when I want it to stay in 4 wheel drive. Driving in 4x4 is not recommended UNLESS conditions are very bad. AUTO is designed to be used all the time when road are bad. Only time I disengage mine is when I am driving on clear dry roads or at the speed limits, mileage will go down if in AUTO.
