03 Z71 Ext. Cab w/metal rattling in rear

Hello, new here and glad I found this site. My 03 GMC Z71 SLT AT,has almost 300,000 miles on it and this is not a new noise but an increasingly louder noise. It is a metal rattling noise {like maybe rocks in a pot-metal bowl} only when it is in drive. I have put it in neutral and revved the motor, no noise. Coasted in drive, no noise. Only when accelerating. Any help is appreciated before I start swapping parts. Thanks

Check the heat shield from your muffler and Catalytic Converter. When the welds rust off, the heat shield which is on the top side of the Cat and muffler. It will make a rattling noise, i pulled mine off when it did that.

Start with this simple check and let us know and we can move on to the next area that maybe causing the rattling issues.
