ext. cab stand box 4x2 and I want to say 3.42 rear end not 100% on the rear

My book (GMC brochure) omits the e cab standard box with 5.3L and only list the 6.2L w/3.73 axle at 10,700 lbs MAX (truck+trailer+cargo+pass)

The e cab long box is 9,500 so standard box would be somewhat less.

The HD trailer pkg does not allow you to tow more, it just is additional equipment to relieve stress on the truck.

Note - If you got a lower ratio 3.08 your tow rating will drastically be reduced. 3.08 is ecomony ratio, 3.73 is preferred for towing along with 6.2L engine

If you got a brochure for your truck, look in the back for more information, last page before color chips

thanks and two other things one for the trailer brake control box is there any diff on getting one from the dealer or having an after market one installed? and the other if I were to put in a goose neck hitch what would be the safe tow cap?

The GM dealer cannot do much for you in the way of brake controller. The optional GM one cannot be retrofitted to the truck as its intergrated when built and the exisiting truck does not have any provisions to allow that. The better controllers are Prodigy, find RV place as they should have all the cable adapters to make it plug and play and most likely qualified tech to install it properly.

As for whats safe to tow in Texas I cannot help. But from how your truck is configured, 2wd 1500 w5.3L I would say there is not a whole lot of trailer you can safely tow with a light weight truck. Your truck just does not have the power, suspension and big enough brake system to tow a 5th wheel IMO. More geared to towing small boat or other small trailer. less than 4000 lbs. Keep in mind if you are towing more than your vehicle can safely tow and you are involved in a accident, you could be held responsible for unsafe equipment and your insurance might not cover you in that instance.

Just saying, I worked for years for the state dot and saw a fair amount of accidents involving people towing more than the vehicle could handle. They usually end up having everything destroyed once they lose control.

did you see more with people pulling with half tonnes, or quarter ton SUVs? (grand cherokees, Durango, Blazer, Sequoia, 4Runner etc)

just curious. see alot of trailers behind these kind of vehicles and i shake my head.

Yes, I can honestly say I cannot recall any bad accidents involving bigger capable trucks, some tire blow outs and plain old driver negligence such as speeding, cutting someone off or pulling out and not seeing oncoming traffic but not where the load caused the accident. But I only worked 40 hrs 4 days a week 7am-5pm and never weekends.

Lots of times you would come upon motorists broken down on side on the road and when you stop to see if you could help. You couldn't help but wonder, what are they thinking towing a large trailer like that will a small 1/2 pu? Also, I encounted some who were proud the were able to get as far as they did and knew they were taking a risk and still ventured out. Lots of people up here pulling all terrain vehicles, boats, etc with small suv's.

I noticed in a lot of states they are cracking down on this.

2010 towing

I have a gmc2010 with tow package would I need to buy a extra wiring
harness for the Prodigy controller or does it come with every thing I need?.Thanks

I did not when I had one put in my 2010 GMC truck but then again I had a RV dealer do it. They only charged for the controller, (no wire kit) + 1 hr labor. There should be wire leads under your dash to connect to the controller and a fuse to be installed for the factory wiring to be live. As I said, I did not mess with it, paid someone to do it who knew what they were doing.

2010 towing

I have not looked under dash yet,Like you said I may need I THINK a 30amp fuse under hood?also do you know a web site that I can by stuf to add to my truck?,Thanks for advice.
