Folks, I recently acquired a 2003 GMC Sonoma ZRX. The truck is in great shape, looks almost new and only has 54K miles on it. But the gas mileage is horrible. Last check it was 15.9 MPG. Is there a way to check the ECM chip to determine if it is a stock chip or a high performance chip? Any help is greatly appreciated.

GMC Sonoma Gas Mileage

Thanks for the reply, Flhr95. I was afraid you'd say that... I was hoping there was something different about the truck such as a high performnace chip in the ECU. Something that I could change to improve the mileage.

I have a 2003 Sonoma SLS 4x2 4.3L with 134k miles. I was getting 16-17 mpg for the past few years. I just put in new spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, PCV valve, and fuel filter. I do mostly highway driving to/from work, no traffic (65 mph sustained) and am averaging 20-21 mpg.

The ZRX may be in good shape aesthetically, but was it maintained mechanically?

02 sonoma

i have an 02 step side sls 4.3l slammed on 4/3 drop with full 3inch intake, tbs, and aem air fuel gauge and cat back to vibrant stealth muffler me and my bud used hp tuners program it was tuned for economy and it has very good air fuel i almost cracked 500miles to a tank my car in kms it said 802.6 those trucks r good on highway if u cruise if u rp it dont complain about mpg lol.

I have a 2003 ZR2 and I get about the same mileage. Basically terrible. Everyone I have talked to gets about the same. If anyone has figured out how to improve it, I would love to hear about it.

Bring your Sonoma to a speed shop and have them Dynotune it for your type of driving.

I managed to get about 21-23 MPG on my Jimmy on the hyway but i have to use 91 octane for fuel now with the changes made to the program to keep my engine from knocking when i am to hard on the skinny peddle .;)

molson that makes no sense that u had to switch to 91 octance cause of the tune why didnt they tune it for 87 and jsut get rid of the knock.... I did that myself and leaned out all the rich spots. If u reallly wanna save on gas u need aem air fuel and hp tuners program and learn how to tune and data log then u can jsut modd the stock ecu the sonoma has a fair amount of options in there hp tuners program to.

I do have a HP tuner but i decked the heads and have a higher compression ratio on the 96 toy.

Take note though, the HP tuners don't support the years 96. Your have to use a 98 and up PMC and start with a custom program to make it work when you start changing engine internal parts.

Ya i have an 02 and i got hp tuners i recently did a throttle body spacer and had to reset all the jets still havnt retuned it but still mange to pull 450-500 city so highway is still probably over 6-700 but in the end if u have hp tuners best way for u to get good mileage your gonna have to get aem air fuel guage then u can data log thought ur hp tuners and u can get ur air fuel at 14.6 in every area like low rpm to wide open throttle u will get more power plus good fuel economy. :D thats what i do anyways and i can complain what i get for a v6 int he end its better then my 2.3l h23 honda motor i had before lol
