My 2001 1500hd will not shift into 4 low. no problems in shifting into 4 wheel auto or 4 wheel high. When i press the button to shift to 4 low the light blinks but never engages the transmission. When i press the button to shift to 4 high or 4 auto it blinks and then turns steady and the tranny is engaged. Anyone have any ideas?

Shiftless in Steamboat

Thanks for the information link. I have been through the process of shifting into 4 low with the transmission in neutral and the truck moving at less than 3 mph. It just doesn't want to shift to 4 low. Light blinks and then eventually goes out and the light returns to what ever position it was on prior to the attempted shift.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptoms(s) described in the PI.

Condition/concern:

Electronic transfer case may stop shifting if you repeatedly try to shift the transfer case in a short period of time.

Recommendation/Instructions:

The software in the transfer case control module has a "shift abuse lock out" mode to protect the module and encoder motor. This concern will occur if the module senses repeated shift requests in a short period of time. If the driver continuously tries to shift in and out of different modes, the transfer case control module will stop trying to shift for several seconds to prevent abuse damage to occur. Cycling the ignition off for 30 seconds or more should allow the transfer case to resume normal operation.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Keep us posted on your Sierra and hope this helps

Just a quick suggestion, but my 1997 does the same thing and it is a 3 button switch, and a friend of mine which is a service manager @ our local Chevy dealership said it was the actuator on the transfer case. He said that it wasn't closing all the way and the vacuum is leaking and causing it to change while driving. Hope this helps.

Anyone happen to fix this problem? I’m having the same thing & can’t find any answers.
i have a tech 2, I live in Scotland so I’m pretty much on my own here, the scan tool says that it won’t allow a 4 low or neutral command because it says the vehicle is in gear or moving faster than 3mph, when you look at the live data on the ecm & tccm they both say the correct gear & 0mph, there are no codes only problem is it won’t shift into 4 low or neutral under any circumstanc. Can someone please help me out???
