Our transmission is having problems in reverse (meaning it will not go into reverse). When in reverse it feels like the vehicle bogs down. As well as in drive will not upshift into second nor any other gears. I have the v6 vortec style engine. I have some basic understanding to rebuild this 4l60e transmission if need be but am trying to understand what the possible cause could be causing this problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks ahead of time.

I forgot to add year and other whatnot. 1995 gmc jimmy 4x4 v6

It sounds like your Sunshell is fractured and your transmission is in 2nd gear, not in first. R&R is the only way to get your jimmy up and running again so try not to run or drive the jimmy to keep further damages as a result.

Keep us posted and be safe

Alright I was just wanting to confirm my thought on that. What are your thoughts on the beast sunshell. I have heard about it but is it worth it? As well as is there anything else I should be sure to check when I rebuild this.

The best shell is the "BEAST" from SPX, they are nearly unbreakable or the GM #24221190 revised sun shell kit has worked in most cases, however the sun shell is always going to be a concern. The revised GM sun shell rarely fails and if it does, it's most likely to strip the teeth off the sun shell.

The pumps for the 4L60E can be found in 10 vane and 13 vane versions. Best to use the 13 vane pump, the pump does not have a higher pump volume than the 10 vane pump. Instead, the number of vanes was changed to alter harmonics that caused the rotors to break up. You'll also want to make sure that the splines on the stator are in good shape and replace the boost valve with a Sonnax valve or TransGo, as these are frequently worn out. The valve and sleeve can be replaced easily for around $50. Oversized (0.490" versus the stock 0.470" or 0.420") reverse boost valves provide a moderate increase in pressure, and are a good addition to any 4L60E.

Also remove and discard the 3/4 load release spring assemblies (5 small rectangular spring assemblies installed into the input housing, on the outside of the clutch pack). This really improves the 2-3 shift.

The Low/reverse piston which is the large piston at the rear of the transmission's internal components. Never reuse casting number 8681725, as it is known to have durability problems. Replace it with one that has casting number 8685550 (GM part number 8685549), which is a much stronger piece.

Since you are inside the transmission, replace all the electrical components (wiring, solenoids and switches) inside, especially the variable force motor solenoid (electronic pressure control) valve solenoid.

Keep us posted and be safe;)

I will I plan on starting this up next month with a buddy of mine to tackle this. Right now me and my wife have no car till we fix this unfortunately. Sorry for such late responses always busy it seems. Will let you know when I get to finishing this project thank you very much for the advice on things that should be replaced.

Being a 1995, your better off buying a used 4L60E transmission with low milage and good transmission line pressure.

You can just replace a few things that will keep your cost down and have a reliable used transmission. As mentioned, replace the the reverse valve and sleeve for around $50. You should considered a Oversized (0.490" versus the stock 0.470" or 0.420") reverse boost valves that provide a moderate increase in pressure, and are a good addition to any 4L60E.

Also use Castrol® Transynd™ for your transmission fluid. Your going to have a long trouble free 4L60E.

Good luck, keep us al posted and this should keep your transmission budget under $800.00 in total.:D
