the other day my jimmy stalled while driving. when i pulled off the road i tried to start it again and it started for a second then stalled twice then just kept turning over. got fresh gas and a can of gas treatment in it and nothing. got it towed home and took off the fuel filter. when i took the old filter off a bunch a black shit came out of the end from the tank and the end that goes to the motor the gas came out clear. so today i put in a new filter. i had to use hard repair line with the fittings and rubber fuel line to connect it to the line from the tank. i made sure the hose wasnt kinked because the line comes along the frame rail drops down 90* then turn back 90* straight along the frame into where the filter is. so i try starting the truck and nothing, just truns over. when i use starting fluid its runs (roughly) for a second or two until it burns up then stalls again. on top of the motor behind the throttle body their is two lines that come up in between the motor and the firewall, one line has a small cap and when unscrewed looks like an air valve stem for filling up air in tires. when i press the middle gas shot out. so i know its getting gas up until the fuel rail. the only thing i can think of is the fuel injectors. could that black gunk stuff clog up my injectors? if anyone has had this problem or know what else would make it not run i would really appreciate it. another thing the car wouldnt run with the starting fluid if i didnt have a spark correct? i pretty sure it has spark though

maybe try

You didnt list the year or the motor on this vehicle. without that info it is hard to tell you where to go to troubleshoot. It should have the fuel pressure checked using a fuel pressure test kit. You might repost and list the year and motor.

sorry about that its a 1997 4.3 vortec

Start with the simple and check the fuel pressure reading.

Fuel problems are the main cause of hard starts, no starts, rough idle and stalling in 96+ engines. This is assuming that regular maintenance has been performed: Plugs, Wires, Cap, Rotor, Fuel filter, Air Filter, PCV valve.

The vortec fuel system pressure should be 60–66 PSI with the pump running and engine off. If the fuel pressure falls below 60 PSI the engine most of the time will not start, especially when cold.

If it does, most case it would only start and idle, when hot, at 50 PSI. But idle is all it would do and it will not be driveable.

Take note that when the ignition switch is turned to the on position, the Power Control Module (PCM) energizes the fuel pump relay for 2 seconds allowing the fuel pump to pressurize the system to 60-66 PSI.

If the PCM fails to see ignition reference pulses in 2 seconds, the module shuts off the pump relay. But as a back-up to a defective fuel pump relay or PCM signal to the relay. The oil pressure switch will activate the fuel pump when the oil pressure reaches 4 PSI from a long crank time.

Good luck and keep us posted

I assume you checked the distributor cap? I had a similar issue and found the electrodes inside the cap to be corroded so badly that I was amazed it had even run at all up to that point. New cap/rotor, and starts trouble free now.
