My 2004 Sierra gets about 12 mpg in town. 14 on a veryy good day. Is this bad or not? 5.3L ext. cab, 237,000 miles.

I had a 2004 GMC Sierra SLT E. Cab Z71 5.3L with all options. In the 40,000 miles (4 yrs) I had it, I averaged 17.3 mpg. I logged all my miles and fuel for business reasons so I could easily compute the mileage to separate personal use.

But, the truck was 100% stock with oem tires, oem exhaust etc. Only thing I did was install synthetic lubricants all over. The truck was about 50% hwy / 50% short around town driving but no traffic lights (in this semi-rural area) to drag race from.

My 2000 Sierra with 2 wheel drive, 5.3 liter engine, and automatic averages 15 to 17 mpg in the mostly short trips I take. I do use the air conditioning in warm weather, and I drive conservatively. Most of the time, I'm not hauling any loads. Your 12 to 14 mph sounds a bit low.

I have a 2004 GMC with 4.8...with 120000 on it when I bought it..I was getting 15-16 on hwy. Put in K & N and then did dual exhaust...now 20-21 on highway...and my pu is a 4x4
