I just bought a 1989 GMC v1500 suburban. It is in above average condition for a suburban. Not alot of rust but some. Has anyone restored a suburban before that could give me some advice on were to start and a general order of what to do. It is my daily driver. Any advice on restoration or modifications to make it a tuff off road vehicle (not a rock crawler or something like that just able to handle anything I run into). Thanks for the help.

Start with replacing your fuel, brake and transmission lines. Once that is all done you can start with what ever you like to restore. Anyone of the above mentioned will cause you to be on the side of the road.

There FREE catologs or you can down load right from the site...seem to have a lot of good info (pictures) and pricing as well. We have same truck...purchased last month. Nice!

Make sure that the tranny is good to go and the fluid lines are gtg. Then start with interior like replacing carpet and seat foam if needed and while carpet is out get some good sound proofing material. I took out my headlined and used durabak smooth coating instead of fabric. Makes it quieter and wont ever fall down. Any way you choose ta the right choice because its your rig and burbans are fun.

If you are going to do a true restoration, keep everything STOCK. Don't replace with aftermarket stuff that wasn't on the original. Otherwise, your restoration "costs" will never be recouped.

Keep as much of the original components as possible. Replace it with OEM ONLY if it breaks.

If that's not what you were thinking, then restoration would be the wrong adverb.
