Hi all... this my first post on the forum. I apologize for asking such a strange question but I admit I am not very well versed on the GMC Jimmy. A family member has a 1991 GMC Jimmy (2-Door Full-size). This vehicle was their primary driver when it was purchased new from the dealer... shortly after purchase my family member became incapacitated and was no longer able to drive. Obviously it could have been sold or driven by other members in the family but it never was. As a result, the vehicle has sat in an enclosed personal garage in Phoenix, Arizona since 1992 without ever being driven/started since. The vehicle has less than 5,000 miles on it (that's not a typo). The exterior and interior of the vehicle are cosmetically perfect (except for some dust) and there is no rust/corrosion that is visible to me. My family member offered me the vehicle this past weekend if I wanted to fix it up and drive it or make it into an offroader. They would like to see me have some fun with it and keep it in the family. I have always loved the vehicle and have owned several Chevy Tahoes in my time but I am not sure I can afford to take on the restoration process of the mechanicals. If I can't afford to do so I would rather not accept the gift (for personal reasons).
I would love to know from the forum if salvaging it makes sense economically and, if so, what type of work would need to be done to get this thing running reliably again. Obviously I need to take it to a mechanic and have them look it over but excluding tires, seals, and battery what sort of nightmare could I be facing and what can I reasonably expect to pay to get it back to working well. Again, I realize how strange this question must seem... but I would love to get some thoughts before I go through the process of committing to the project. Thanks, Tb
