I have a 97 GMC that simply shuts off when I put it in gear and move it a few feet. If I turn off the ignition, remove the key, reinsert the key and engage the starter it will start right away, but when I slip it in gear and move it, it has a case of the hiccups for a few seconds then will drive normally until I shut the engine off for 5 minutes or more. It will start properly again, but go through its goofy shutdown routine again. If I try to start it without removing the key first, it will turn over, for who knows how long, but not start.

It had similar symptoms a month ago, and after determining the fuel pump was faulty I replaced both the fuel pump and pressure regulator. It has been running great until yesterday, so checked them again and found them to be operating properly.

What else should I be looking for?

Found the problem. Poor connection at the positive battery post. It kind of surprises me though, because it cranked the starter just fine. I would think that the electrical system would find the connection adequate if the starter did.
Nonetheless I cleaned the battery connections and all is well.
