I have a 1998 Jimmy 2WD and it refuses to start. After doing some research and past experience show that it's not starting because of the distributor cap. My question is does anyone have any idea why the gauges are not working, or why the signal lights won't work. The vehicle will not shift out of gear either.

I have checked all the fuses and they are not burnt out. I put a fuse tester on them and I get no light. I move them to a different location and test them and they light up fine. The hazard lights work fine but no turn signals. I can't shift out of gear unless I use the bypass located under the leather cover on the gear shift. The computer did not give back any information at all. Not that it didn't give errors, but no read out at all.

I'm out of things to suspect, any input would be greatly appreciated.

From what you described above, your Ignition Switch has gone bad, the Wire harness, or the Fuse block. Most common will be the Ignition switch that has gone bad. Try spraying electrical contact cleaner in to the switch and see if that will get the Jimmy started.

As the switch moves back and forth, wear occurs. There are separate stopping places inside the switch to make the electrical connections to give power or remove it. Sometimes it will get stuck and will not move past a certain point in the switch. It is possible there is a problem in your steering column but it is more likely your switch.:(

You can pick up a new one at Auto Zone and keep us posted.
