I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy. My service 4WD started coming on about a month ago. I took it to a mechanic who replaced the front differential valve on the front transfer case and also replaced the vacuum switch for the 4WD. Now every other time I start the vehicle, sometimes the service 4WD light comes on and sometimes is doesn't. When the light doesn't come on, I have 4WD. That is I can engage 4WD high and low and also Auto 4WD. I think it is something electrical but I have already spent $300 in labor and parts. Does anyone have any suggestions about what could be causing it?

Start with the simple and check all your vacuum lines and replace any damaged ones. Most case it's low vacuum to the actuator under the battery tray from cracked vacuum lines.

Keep us posted and good luck.

I have a 2000 Jimmy Diamond edition and had a similar problem. Took it to the dealership and luckily spoke to a mechanic who went thru all the options listed above. He then said start with the easiest, check the electrical connections, the plug on the left hand side off the passenger front seat behind the plastic panel down by your feet. Corrosion can cause the problem. I located it, disconnected the plug and bingo, thats where the issue was. Try this , it controls all electronic components from the dash.
