Hello, new to the forum. Look forward to helping anyone with my experiences in the future once I figure out what I am doing. Thanks in advance for your help. I have searched the internet to no help. Have a 2000 Jimmy Diamond Edition, v6. Loose steering. About 2 inches of play left and right before it begins to turn the tires. No noises. Steering wheel itself seems fine. What would cause this? My troubleshooting results in all the linkages to the tires visibly fine. No play in wheels. There is some play in the shaft coming out of the firewall though. I can see about a 1/4 inch fresh exposed metal on the shaft before it enters the rubber boot that goes through the firewall. This shaft also twists left and right and also wiggles front to back, roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch in all directions. Is this normal? I would think is should be tight with no movement. Have read about an adjustment on the gearbox but cant find specifics on it(or the gearbox)lol. Thanks

Replace your Pitman arm and idler arm. 80% of the time, it's going to be the Idler arm that needs to be replaced. You can check this by turning the wheel left to right on the passenger side by hand and look at your Idler arm.

If your idler arm moves up and down rather side to side, replace your idler arm. The Pitman arm should be ok since it is bolted right to the steering box and will not have any play to it. You can get away with greasing your linkages, the grease will take up any excessive play and your steering should get tighter.

Good luck and keep us posted, the other thing also would be a miss aligned drag link (not leveled). The drag link being not leveled can also do what you have described, most guys who lower there jimmy run in to this and needs to have the front steering linkage realigned.

Good luck and keep us posted.;)

Thanks for the post. Would have responded sooner but didnt know anyone replied to me, never got an email as I was expecting. I will look at that tomorrow to see if I can tell what you are instructing. Thanks alot.
