2 days ago my A/C was blowing cold 2/3's of the way home from work then it went warm. Yesterday it worked for about 5min till it went warm. Today it worked all the way home, about 30min. but only got down to about 50-55 degrees. Today i checked the pressure witch read a little low so I added freon till the gauge read full. It blew cold air at idle in park in the driveway getting near 40degrees. But.... when I pulled out to take the truck for a ride it immediately blew warm, I pulled over checked under the hood to find the compressor clutch was not engaged... Any ideas? By the way my coolant level is correct and all related fuses are in-tacked.

year make and model and motor size would be a great start;)

Also please tell me how the gauge read full (looking for low side and high side preasures)

Have you jumpered the low pressure switch? Mine is on the accumulator (little aluminum tank), on passenger side close to firewall. If you're sure the system is fully charged and I repeat, fully charged, but operates when the switch is jumped, then you have a bad pressure switch. @$20

didnt jump the low pressure side but i did jump the high side and it did not kick on the clutch.

well ok low side preasure full is not what i was looking for.
To diag this problem you really need to see both high side and low side preasures. Those preasures will tell the story as to whats wrong.

Now what you can check on your own is the cooling fan. Needs to run while ac is on i belive you have a electric one. Also use a garden hose on the radiator to cool the condensor to see if ac returns while being cooled by water.
Yes jump the swith but don't leave it jumped becaues compressor damage will happen.

And if none of the above don't help go pay 1 hour labor of diag to find problem again you need gages hooked up to find the problem.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. Also I have a clutch fan. I believe I'm going out to see my mechanic/brother in-law this weekend so we will get to the bottom of this. Once again thanks for the help.

I had this very problem on my 2001 GMC back in 2002ish. The low pressure switch was at fault. Check the terminals on the switch for any signs of corrosion, once they had the switch off you could see evidence of that. They must have had some kind of problem with this switch because at the time it was on national back order so the service dept just took one from a new truck on the lot and I never had a problem after that.

I have the same problem before
corrosion is the most common thing, check for that .

by the way if the system is fully charged it could be a bad pressure switch as indicated above.
