2001 GMC Air Conditioner?

I have a 2001 GMC I bought it new back in 2000 and I now have 184,000 miles on it. The A/C keeps freezing up so the blower wont blow very strong at all. I notice under the hood on the small line there are 2 places to hook hoses to. There is also a small crimp in the middle of the line where the line breaks into to change the inline filter. What is this filter called I've herd some call it a orfis tube. The line will freeze solid in front of this close to the cab and the big line freezes also as well as the canister. But where the small line has this so called filter in front of it towards the front of the truck where this crimp is its not cold at all the line is warm like the freon isn't circulating beyond this filter. Is this just call the inline a/c filter or what? Thanks in advance!!

It's called a filter dryer. Because it removes small particles and moisture from the system. It is most probably not plugged, unless you've had a system burnout (then the system wouldn't work at all) or someone has added dirty refrigerant.

Check the evaporator coil. It is located in the cab under your dash. It is in front of the heater coil and could be blocked with leaves and debris. You should be able to clean it without removing refrigerant from the system.

The problem could also be a low refrigerant charge. But do not just start adding refrigerant into the system. Testing guages are around $200.

Your least expensive option is to clean the evap coil and if problem persists, buy a can of refrigerant with the 1 guage attached (about $30). Read and follow the directions. They'll tell when to add and when not to add.

If the above fails to solve the problem, then replace the filter dryer.

It's called a filter dryer. But start by cleaning the evaporator coil. It's in the cab under the dash. The 2 refrigerant lines from the engine compartment going through the firewall are attached to it. It most probably is loaded with leaves and debris.

Ideally, you should put a set of guages on to check a/c pressures. But they're about $200. So if your problem persists, go buy a can of refrigerant with a guage on it ($30), and follow the directions. Do not just dump the refrigerant into the system, follow the directions, especially concerning air temperature and guage pressure . An overcharged system can be an expensive fix.

If still not solved, then look toward the filter dryer and the metering device. It is ok for the low (pressure) side, (the tube that is frozen) to have ice on it. They are supposed to be "beer can cold".

Well got my problem fixed. I replaced the orifice tube/dryer and put in all new freon and 1 can of oil and 1 can of stop leak. It works better than when it was new. I got 184,000 on this truck i purchased it new the day after Thanksgiving in 2000. The only work I've had to do to it is change out the bearing hub assembly on the passenger side and that's it. Its definitely been a good one. The motor knocks like hell but it has since it hit 20,000 miles. The dealer always told me its normal on that truck. It keeps on ticking so I guess there right.
 
nice job 2001 and yes it's called a orifice tube. the dryer others are talking about is really called a reciver dryer. That is the big round canster the big line goes in to before the evaporator.

the reason a drity or bad orifice tube will cause this problem on this truck is that where the freon turns front a liquid to a vapor.
 
Any damage to the orifice tube will cause this problem
need to be fixed
