Just bought a 2001 GMC Sierra Ext. Cab 4x4 yesterday. It has a problem with the fuel gauge. Wondering if anyone has had the same problem and how they fixed it. (salesman may be willing to help fix it - but where do we start looking for the cause).

The fuel gauge reads empty (yes, there is gas in it) on starting the truck, also the low fuel light comes on. After driving a few miles the gauge needle starts to climb. Sometimes it will stay and read correctly for a while, then for no apparent reason (no bumps etc.) it will go back to empty mark and the low fuel light comes on again. This also happened while sitting at an idle in park, and my passenger undid his seat belt, coincidence maybe?
I am wondering if it is the sending unit or an electrical issue?

The other issue is the keyless entry, the lock button appears not to work so haven't tried the unlock button. I have never had a vehicle with keyless entry before, could this be just a dead battery in the remote?

Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance :)

the fuel problem: my '01 does that same thing. my machanic tells me its the fuel sending unit and the only way to change it is to drop the tank out... mine does everthing you say yours does. ive seen mine bounce around enough to know how much gas is in there. i have never ran out of fuel so good luck with that 1....

keyless entry: ya the battery is prolly dead. mine doesnt work from the distance it once did but at any rate you can pry the remote open with a small screw driver and change that battery.... good luck....
