2001 gmc sierra transmission problems

Hi, i have an 01 sierra 4.8L 2 wheel drive with a 4l60e automatic trans. the transmission is having problems and i want to see if anyone has had the same problem or can confirm what i am thinking. In second gear it will hold up to 3,000 rpms, beyond that the rpms will sudenly redline if im still on the gas and the truck will not continue to excelerate unless i let off the gas and let it go into 3rd. it seems to me that it is slipping, like 2nd gear is bad (stripped or something). Im pretty sure it is 2nd gear thats bad but i wanted to see what others thought before i went ahead and bought a remanufactured transmission incase it is an easy fix.

Ya never know, You could try changing the fluid and filter and see if that does anything. Probably wont but its worth a try. It did the trick on my old grand cherokee. How many miles are on the truck/tranny?

the truck and tranny have about 120,000 miles on them.

Dropped gears

The issue your describing sounds like a 3-4 cluch failure common with these transmissions, same thing happened to mine at 270,000 miles. Either need to rebuild or get rebuilt trans and trade out. autozone has them for 1329 with 500 core. make sure you take picture of the input shaft and send it to the transmission shop they use once ordered.

i actually found a place in pheonix that sells remanufactured transmisions for 650 with a 2 year warranty. i think im going to do it myself. I just hope it comes out smoothly!

Careful, just because is cheaper does not mean it has value. Many low cost trans rebuilts use parts sourced from the far east which are of questionable quality. Not saying the one you found is like that, but check it out good before spending your money. They have to cut corners somewhere to sell at a low price and buying cheap components are often where its done.

Yes, that makes sense but i have to give them my core, so im guessing that is why the price is as low as it is. I hope at least!
