My 2001,4.3L,2WD, Jimmy stalled at red light. It would crank over but not start. I poured a little gas into the throttle body and it will run until gas is used up. I have 21 LBS of pressure at the test port on fuel rail. My question is; Is there anything electrical that would keep the pump from pushing enough fuel other than a plugged fuel filter? I have not had a problem until now. But I have only had the truck for a year. My security light comes on when the key is in the switch, blinks a couple of times but goes out so I assuming my Passlock system is not keeping the fuel pump from pumping. I know from reading about this GMC problem with the security system that their is several things that will not let the truck run if the security system has been activated. I know you must wait 10 mins to restart. I don't think that is the problem. Can a fuel pump just go out all at one time? I'm thinking it would have been showing signs of failing for some time before it failed. But I'm not sure. Whart do you guys think?

fuel pump question

Yes a fuel pump will go bad all at once, sometimes they just quit working. I'm not sure what kind of pressure your truck should have for fuel pressure at the rail. But I'm thinking that 21 psi is not enough pressure, You can call an auto parts store or even google (how much fuel pressure should I have at the fuel rail on my 2001 4.3 L jimmy) you will get the info you need on this. Also try getting in the truck shut the door turn the key and listen to see if you can hear a whirring noise to indicate that your fuel pump is working. you might have a fuel pump that is weak.

Check to make sure the ground wire to the fuel sending unit still has a good ground. A bad and corroded ground to the sending unit will cause a week fuel pressure. If the ground wire is good, then more likely the fuel pump has gone bad and will need to be replaced. :(

BTW you need 62-65 psi of fuel pressure to get the engine started and when started and running will drop by 5 psi.

replaced fuel pump and problem fixed

Replaced the fuel pump and the truck cranks up every time.
