I have a 2002 GMC 1500 5.3 won't start - no codes. I have put two fuel pumps, changed fuel filter and starts. Runs for a short time and then will not start. I have redone ground wires to fuel pump and replaced the fuel system regulator. Have had it to several local shops and problem returns. Just completed another round of fixes and ran fine for day and half, then tried to start after running for hour around town and would not start, after pulling back into parking space, tried to recrank and started fine. Have had the issue for some time and is not something that occurs all the time. My luck, it always occurs when furthest from home or somewhere where we cannot tow easily. Have had problems over last two weeks more common but has been very intermittent over the last year. Only happened a couple of times but always starts after some time sitting. Lately, this is not taking care of the problem. The main issue to find is it is not setting off any codes and check engine light does not come on at all. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

well next time it does it you need to do some test.

Test 1 check spark (google it if you don't know how)
(buy a fuel pressure gauge)
next test fuel pressure.
also look for theft light flashing in dash when this happens.

there are only a few things that make it a no start with no codes. do these test and let mne know and i will tell you what to do next.

when you say it won't start
no cranking over?
crank but no start?
have You replaced the fuel pump relay?
sometimes You will have a code but it doesn't turn on the service engine light
so have you scaned to see if there is any codes pending?

Yes, cranks but does not start. Have had it to local shops but they have not reported any codes. I assume they would have checked. I need to follow up. May need to change the fuel pump relay. After each change of fuel pump (two in last three weeks), it starts and runs some. Most recent it ran a 50 mile trip and shut off, would not restart and had to tow. Thanks, I will take a look at fuel pump relay and change.

Fuel pump relay was changed. No codes came up. Anyone out there have any additional ideas here? We are at a loss....

Yes, thanks for the post. At this time, my mechanic is driving it and has put around 200 miles on it with no issues. Said he changed a second fuel pump relay that he did not realize was there. At this time, it is running normal. I will need to wait to see if it does again and go through your test. Is that the correct way or should we go through it now? Sorry, I am not a major mechanic but can follow the directions and come up with the specifics.

Hey, I received a call from my mechanic this morning. The 2002 GMC 5.3 would not start this morning as he was driving to work. He looked at the codes and was receiving a security code. The truck would not start. As he tried to start, the fuel pump was not pumping fuel. Again, the only codes were the security codes. I am very glad this happened to him prior to returning to me. He drove for a week, over 250 miles with no issue. Again, it would not start today, it is random and not consistent. Any ideas what this may be? We have been through this for over 6 weeks now and has been inconsistent for 18 months but would always start on the second or third attempt. Happy 2011 provided some insight. Any ideas from where to go from here?

have the crank shaft pos sensor check my 2011 did the samething in away changed had it towed to the dealer and everything was fine. the day i went to pick up the truck it did it to them that was the the cause come to find out.

All, we think we have narrowed it to the security system in the key switch. We are ordering the part now and will install on Monday and let you know.

Make sure it's not the " theft deterent system" , which can cause the engine to crank but not fire. I don't know for sure if you have that system on your truck, but on the 2003 Chevy Malibu, it's a widely known problem. Look in the owner's manual for the procedure to reset the system, which consists essentially of turning the key to " ignition on" and waiting for 10 minutes , at which time the system resets itself automatically. There should be a dash warning light that the system has activated, but in my experience the warning light is not reliable.
When I had the problem, it did not set off any diagnostic trouble codes.

Ya know people
Please read the whole thread before posting. That way you don't tell people what we already know......................
