I own a 2006 GMC Canyon with 18500 miles Yesterday I checked the engine oil and found a white froth on the dipstick. The froth was light tan in color and was soft to the touch. I believe this is a sign of water or coolant escaping into the oil. Anyone else have this problem or heard of it? I changed the oil myself at 13500 and 16500 miles. The last oil change was on March 3 2009. I have an appointment at dealer and need info as I do not trust service dept at local dealer.

Blown head gasket, warped head or cracked block would be the worst case scenario. There are a few other things it could be. Have the oil changed, don't mention anything and see is they notice. If not then maybe its nothing to worry about. Check the oil again after they change it and check out your radiator coolant for oil. 18k miles is about when the trouble starts on GM vehicles. Next time try a Ford or Toyota.

Some very slight amount at the top of the dipstick or at the mouth of the oil fill hole is fairly normal from the ambient air condensation.

Whitish or light tan creamy colored oil at the level indicator(bottom) of the dipstick is indication of coolant getting into the oil, and can get costly. Are you still under warranty? GMC should cover the repair...

1 hows the coolant look? oily???
2 if you want to save a bit buy a 40 dollar compression gage and follow directions
3 iis the truck/engine heating up all the way...could be not getting hot enough to get rid of condensation...[also does it if only short trips.

With the engine cold, loosen the oil pan bolt and let just a little oil/(water) out and tighten the nut back up.

Water will always settle to the bottom of oil.
If the is coolant in the system, it will be the first thing to drain out.

The other option/possibility is condensation from making short trips in your truck and not letting the engine reach operating temperature for half an hour or longer to evaporate the condensation that builds up over time from short trips.

Do you take a lot of short trips? Do you live in a humid environment? I could very well be condensation.

YOu're right that the foam is a water oil emulsion. But water can come from anywhere not just your coolant. Are you losing coolant?

Probably a busted head gasket. It will get worst. Check cylinder compression.
