Just bought my first gmc and am wanting to know a few things about it! First thing that i'm wanting to know is what kind of oil is used in the gm products from the factory? The truck that i bought is used and has 46k on it and i know what i like to use but dont know whats recommended for the 5.3 or if its just personal preference. The sencond thing is that i noticed that when shifting up it shifts perfect but when slowing down and it gears down it gears down a little hard. Was wondering if they all do that and i'm not used to it or if its something i need to get looked at. Any help would be appreciated!

Regular oil, nothing special. As long as it meets the current standards, its good enough for a GM vehicle. Factory fill was supplied by whomever won the lowest bid contract.

Factory fill for trucks was just regular 5W-30 mineral oil, not synthetic ever in GMC (or Chevy) trucks, not even to this day. Only Cadillacs and Corvettes came factory filled with synthetic oil in 2006.

As for the shifting, hard to say if normal without driving it. Check the fluid to see if its at the full mark (hot and on level ground) and also that they fluid is clear cherry red in color. If it smells or looks dark, the trans might have been subjected to hard towing or overheating. But sometimes the trans will shift odd depending on how it is driven.
