I have a 2010 GMC Sierra. I noticed starting last year that it was using oil and had a whitish smoke coming out of the tailpipe when it first starts up or has been sitting for a little time (the smoke is not always there, but is from time to time). I also have noticed a loud tapping noise when the engine starts up (I figure a lifter). I took it to my local GMC dealership since the truck is under warranty and explained what was happening. They kept the truck for a couple of days and said that they could not observe any of the problems that I had listed. Amazingly as I walked out to the truck with the tech, the truck does the ticking noise...

So anyways they say that MC requires them to do a oil consumption test with me bringing in back in at 3000 miles to see how much oil it is using. I obliged and brouht the truck back in at 3000 miles after the test began and a different service tech checked the oil, said it was low, and then said he would tell the advisor I was working with.

A couple of days go by and the advisor calls me and says that GM wants them to do another oil consumption test and to bring the truck in. Now they want me to bring the truck in every 1000 miles to have the oil checked. I have done that and at the second oil check they reported that the oil was low. Now keep in mind this entire time the tapping noise and white smoke from time to time is still happening.

The dealership called me today to ask if I was at the millage for the last check. I told them I hit the required miles this morning and would try to get by this afternoon for the check. The dealership advisor told me that was good and that they had a $100 bill that needed to be taking care of for testing and services. I asked why there would be a bill since the truck was under warranty and he replied that since they had found nothing wrong with the truck, and if the oil checked out today, that these test were not under warranty.

1. We have confirmed that it used oil at the last oil consumption testing.
2. We have confirmed the ticking noise.
3. There is still white smoke from time to time.

I feel like I am getting the run around with this dealership and that they are not really interested in helping take care of the problem. My question is 1)Does anyone know if GM requires 2 oil consumption test? 2) Does this sound like proper operating procedures for a dealership and GM, & 3) Has anone else had these problems with their 5.3L GMC?

Thanks in advance for any advice or information.

If they never advised you ahead of time of a possible charge then they are unethical in trying to collect money from you now. Here's hoping they never got you to sign any work order so as to claim they advised you at that time. Sounds to me like you are dealing with a dishonest dealer and I would call Chevrolet Customer Service and complain.

Sgeorge,
I would like to apologize for the issues that you are experiencing with your truck. I understand your frustrations with this. I would be happy to look into this further for you. Can you please send me a PM with your name, address, phone number, VIN, current mileage and the name of your dealer? I look forward to hearing back from you.
Thank you,
Stacy GMC Customer Service

We have a 2008 Chevy Silverado 5.3 that we had a similar issue with relating to the tapping noise. Apparently GM used camshafts that were made in China and would need to be replaced if/when they fail. We got it in at 96,000+ miles and replacing the camshaft and lifters was all covered under the powertrain warranty. Not sure if they were still using the same shitty cams in 2010, but that might be a option for you to check into. Based on my experience, white smoke and engine oil loss suggest valves or head gasket issues. Good luck and please keep us posted.
