2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Paint Chipping

I too purchased a new 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab that is Fire Red in November of 2011. It is now September of 2012 and the truck has all of 2811 miles on it. So far I have had the Fire Red Paint chip on the Top of the Hood not the front of the hood as well as on the Driver side front fender and behind the rear door. The Vehicle has always been garaged and at age 59 I treat it better than my wife. It has never been off road and has never seen a trailer hitch. In fact it has never even been down a dirt road. It certainly does not have a "Professional Grade" Paint Job!!! This was my first new vehicle in over 20 years it was going to be "My Retirement Baby".

This will be my last purchase of American Made Junk !!!!

It is now for sale and the sooner it is gone the happier I will be.

Well if you have a 1500 crew cab chances are its was not made in the USA but in Mexico. 95% of all 1500 crew cabs are made in Mexico. Check the first digit in the VIN on the dash, if the first digit is 3 it was made in Mexico. USA made trucks have a 1 in the first place in the VIN.

You know there is always the possibility a rock flung from another vehicle hit your hood without you even knowing it. I once had a rock hit the roof of my truck, I figure it came from a double-bottom 18-wheel gravel hauler going in the opposite direction on 2-lane blacktop. You don't have to drive down gravel roads to find stones and rocks on the roads. Heck could even be kids. This summer I have not been able to park my vehicles outside because of some of the kids on the block. Seems the little brats got some tennis rackets and I have seen them on numerous occasions batting rocks with them. I caught them hitting them at my metal bldg and hollered at them. Now their mother gives me dirty looks every time she drives by.

This thread reminds me of the time I took my truck to an auto glass shop to have the windshield replaced, due to a large crack. Driving the 5 mile distance home from the glass shop, some kid with a BB rifle leaned out the window of a passing car and shot my new windshield, leaving a big " bullseye" right in my field of vision !

We too have paint issues with our new 2012 Sierra sle. It is black so of course it shows everything. I touched the edge of the door with keys in my hand and it went down to the primer. I barely touched it. Had that been my 2005 it wouldn't have even scuffed it. There are also two spots on the hood that a bird pooped on. It was washed and waxed the next day, but there are spots that won't come out of the paint. About 5 chips out of the paint on the hood and I promise it has never seen more than a bug. Took it to the dealer they said that was my fault for leaving the bird poop on it. I scratched it with the key. That those must be rock chips. It's been a rough 7000 miles. I am worried what it will look like in a year.

So IF I buy a 2011 Sierra, I should go ahead and sand her down and spray it then... Lovely..

I don't care how careful you are with your vehicle, you are going to get rock nicks and bird droppings on it. BTW, Bird droppings contain bacteria and acids that can cause staining and destruction of painted surfaces rapidly. The longer its left on the worse the damage, it can only take a few hours to etch the clear coat on a warm day.

Instead of blaming GM, blame your surroundings. Rock nicks and bird droppings are not paint defects.

Blame the Birds and the envvironment

Excuse Me Z15 but we have been buliding cars and Trucks for what close to 100 years now. And it seems that just recently we can't create a paint that won't withstand bird Pooh ??? Okaaaaaaaaay... I mean 30K + for a new truck that whose paint can't with stand a sparrow flying over it and dumping ??????. You are right I won't blame GM.... I will just never buy or recommend another of their products. My wife has a 2006 CRV by Honda that has a paint job that is a tough as nails. The only thing that scratches that is Grocery Carts and other car doors whe she parks too close. I compared the vehicles side by side and and at the rate I am going my Truck will be poka dot by the time it is half her Honda's age and no matter how you twist it that is unacceptable to me. I finally called the local detailing place who indicatedd I was not alone with this prooblem and that they sell a film by 3M to cover the Hood and body side pannels up as far as yuou want to pay to protect them. I am going there at Lunch to see what that costs.

mnewsted,
This is Z15's quote from April 2011 in the "2011 with 800 miles problem" thread to people with multiple tranny and AFM issues: Just drive it and don't worry. By the time you have 10,000 miles on the truck you won't notice it anymore as your driving habits will adapt to the trucks idiosyncrasies.

This is his recent quote regarding tranny and AFM issues in the "2011 6 speed transmission for Sierra" thread: Same here, I traded away a 2010 Sierra SLT E. Cab All Terrain because the AFM engine. Before I hit 10,000...

Paint issues

I'm am the owner of a 2011 GMC Sierra, it was purchased brand new. It had 70km on it when I picked it up from the dealership. I bought a fully loaded truck with leather and chrome, the 6.2 liter engine and the upgraded tow package. The truck was purchased in September 2011 and after the first winter, my windshield was in better shape than my paint job and chrome package. I have had the chrome bumpers, grill and running boards replaced twice now. The paint is in such terrible shape that I can't use a pressure washer at the car wash because it blows the paint off my truck. I am extremely disappointed with the quality of the paint job and I'm not sure that I will purchase another GMC. This is the fourth GMC vehicle I have owned and I have never experienced this with my other vehicles. I don't think I should have to repaint a two year old vehicle that has never been off road or mistreated. I am meticulous about my vehicles, and this is not acceptable.

2010 GMC Sierra with Front Paint Hood Issue

All, I am original owner of a 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 purchased in April 2010 built in the Fort Wayne Assembly Plant with the 5.3L and only 49k miles as of this posting.

I too have had an issue with paint chipping on the front rolled edge of the hood of my Sierra. I too took my vehicle to the dealer where they explained away the issue as a result of paint chips from rocks and such. WRONG ANSWER.

The PROCESS failure mode deals with one of two issues:
* Either GM's metal substrate preparation ahead of their powder primer and liquid paint (often referred to as their pre-treat / etching process) was not operating correctly. And there are two aspects to this process: chemical parameters - think concentration OR mechanical application - think sprayers and the dispersion of the pre-treat to the surface intended.
* Or it is a function of how the hood spot welding parameters are set to attach multiple layers of material together for body structure.

Based upon my particular failure mode, I'm leaning towards the body spot welding parameters being out of control. Why you might inquire?

If there was an issue with the pre-treat chemical concentration or mechanical application, I would have massive issues with paint peeling across this hood in multiple locations and all over the hood. The reality is my failure mode is specific to the front curl / edge of the hood only.

This leads me to the conclusion / root cause that the robotic spot welding of panels in this area is likely tricky due to their geometry and tool access. So I'm bettting the amperage is turned up to ensure panels are held together (creating excessive burn through / slag) at this location at a minimum. When you have excessive burn through / slag during welding, the pre-treat is unable to properly clean / etch these heat effected zones from the welding process properly. And I know this to be the case, because I see the origination point of the failure is at the spot welds. And further, I can see an additional paint failure (paint is just starting to bubble) occurring literally 4 inches away from this initial failure site. Curious? Not me.

What sealed the deal for me was I saw another customer with the same failure mode the other day driving the prior model GMC Sierra (say a 2008MY). He too must have had the issue because he had sanded a spot (same exact location as my failure) and then primed the spot black with a flat primer even though his truck was red in color.

What I don't get is why GM doesn't take ownership of their own processing issues within their plant. And I took this issue to GM corporate and indicated my dissatisfaction and expectation for correction of the issue including repainting of my hood at their expense. And I informed them their action or lack there of would influence my future purchases of GM manufactured vehicles including the new Cadillac ATS-V.

Needless to say, my garage has a BMW in it, and not an ATS-V. Thanks GM!

Rick

I have a 2011 GMC sierra that has paint peeling on the roof. You can literally peel it off. It started from a rock chip but has started peeling in other spots on the roof. I have talked to the local dealer twice and the body shop once. They pretty much told me tough 2luck and sent me on my way. I am very disappointed in the lack of concern, I got it I did not buy my truck there but they have lost my business. I emailed GM today with photos so maybe they will give a crap about my situation. Has any one else had GM fix your paint issue?

if you check this forum, you will find others who had paint falling off their sierra,

I got a 2011 GMC Sierra I bought new , and the paint is flaking off the roof. Just saw it a couple weeks ago. Is there a recall , I can't get any information on it. Thanks
