2011 Sierra with 800 miles problem

Sierra silverado yukon clunk

Are the 5.3 liter 6 speed problems occuring with the 2012 GM trucks>

The Sierra Silverado Yukon Escalade clunk, lag, growl and bang around 45 mph?

Just drive it and don't worry. By the time you have 10,000 miles on the truck you won't notice it anymore as your driving habits will adapt to the trucks idiosyncrasies.

These electronic 6-sp transmissions along with Active Fuel Management (shutting down of 4 cylinders) have some quirks and I bet this is just one of them.

Do the 2012 GM Sierra Silverado Yukon Escalade clunk, lag growl and bang?

1.5 years later and well over 10k miles, and we haven't adjusted to each other's habits!

Are the same issues present; GM clunk, afm growl, lag, bang, transmission problem etc exist in the 2012 General Motor 5.3 liter 6 speed transmission?

If you have a 2012 GM truck and the transmission is incredibly ackward, GM knew about it in 2009. You do not get used to it.

Try cruising at a steady 45 mph on level ground for a few miles.

Not only will you you feel the AFM growl as it shifts from 5th to 6th, you may even feel an occasional "bang" as the computer/AFM picks up the slack/slash in the drivetrain.

GM instituted this AFM garbage to appease the FEDs after the bailout to increase MPGs. It was leverage.

"GM, you do want we want to appease the environmentalists, and we'll give you whatever it takes ($) to get votes!" Win Win.

Thanks GM!

I own a 2012 GMC Sierra SLT Crew Cab All Terrain package with the 6 speed tranny. So far 13,000Km on it. It drives smooth so far. My '08 Silverado was prob the roughest shifting vehicle I have ever owned besides my '91 with a shift kit lol.

AFM came out around 2006, well before any bailouts (2009) but you are on the right track, its to appease the EPA to get higher CAFE standards. What are they going to do to meet the 25 mpg CAFE coming in 2015? Ford is going to start to use aluminum instead of steel.

Dropping cylinders came out long before 2006.

Pushing it on the six speed and into the Silverado and Sierra was pushed after the CAFE standards appeasement to the bailout.

I had similar problems. My truck will ocassionally surge when slowing to a stop, especially on an uphill slope. If I'm easy on the brake and release slightly to coast to light, it changes gears and surges forward. It was unsettling when I first got the truck and I asked a friend with a 2008 that said his did the same thing. I also have it jerk or clank when in the 30-45mph range and get off the gas and then back on...like it can't decide what gear to be in. I had a 99 GMC Sierra I drove the same way that never had these problems. I read this forum and other and because of the "learning transmission" talk I decided to wait to take to dealership. (my mistake). Finally a service engine light came on that forced me to take it in so I listed all the problems I had been having. Transmission issues, light indicating evap/gas cap, rattling headliner, noisy air vent, window fogging on passenger side (air not blending on def.), gas cap tether hanging up and electric fan running super high speeds, etc. These were all indicated over the next 4 months on trips to dealership, calls to GM, multiple escalations letters, documenting things etc. and the only thing fixed was the gas cap tether. The dealership was a major part of the prolem, or should I say the service manager. It seemed like every issue I indicated was either my imagination or my fault:mad:. When trying to reproduce a sporadic transmission issue, I don't think a 2 mile test result saying we can't reproduce the problem is acceptable. I am now submitting for a final time to see if GM will replace the truck. I guess I'll let a lawyer handle it after that:(. I've had a 88 silverado, a 99 sierra, a 03 trailblazer and a 04 Yukon and all had some issues, but nothing comparable to my first new truck...2011 GMC Sierra. Needless to say, that big chunk of money and steep monthly payments make every trip in this truck disappointing. Now just this week the sensor for the front tire pressure is apparently bad. Just great!

I rec'd a call from GM today, and guess what ...!

The GMC case manager called me today about my issue. Net of what he said is as follows:

- This is not a new issue, as unfortunately the case manager has had to deal with it many times before,
- However, GMC's position is that, even though they are aware of the broad customer dissatisfaction caused by the 5.3L/6-speed auto/AFM driveability issue, "the vehicle is operating as designed AND as expected",
- "GMC has NO fix available or in process at this time to address the issue",
- "GMC knows, however, that the issue is triggered by the AFM system but has instructed dealers to not attempt to disable or modify the AFM system since it's an integral component of the overall drivetrain design,
- if GMC ever does come up with a service bulletin (fix), my dealer will alert me when I take the vehicle in for routine service, and lastly,
- "there is nothing GMC or my dealer can do about the issue at this time".

Wow! What a way to run a business!

Next step: Georgia Lemon Law!

I have a 2011 5.3 6 speed also have had a clunk from day one took it to dealer twice Stated that they could find nothing.(Good thing I know how to use a computer so I can find out whats wrong with it.) I have 50,000 plus miles doesnt seem to be getting worse, but I drive these vehicles for up to 250,000 and all three trucks I purchased new. Just concerned what happens after warranty and I,m stuck with a 4000.00 tranny bill. But I do have to say that other than that It is a very well engineered and built truck. It would be nice if GM would address this problem to insure my next truck will be a GMC.

Workaround 'fix'

If you want to minimize the problem, drive with the paddle shift in 5th gear. AFM doesn't kick in and the problem seems less severe, plus no noticealbe degradation of fuel mileage.

Like you, I wish they would fix this which I'm sure could be done with a firmware update!

2008 and does the same thing

My 2008 did the same thing. Almost sounded (to me) like it came from the rear end. I was worried about it at first, but I have to say its not something ive heard in awhile. Truck now has 50k on it.

I have a 2011 sierra crew cab z-71 and have about 22000 miles with the same issues....unfortunately I have had many more problems with mine, I have had to have 4 different engine sensors replace, had a leaking rear 3rd taillight that filled my dome light up with water, and now have one of my oil cooler lines leaking....seems to me that I got a truck that was built on a friday...lol. Hopefully the customer service is better in Texas than it was in Alaska, will post an update after I take the truck in on tuesday.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this amount of problems with a new truck, talked to several friends who have the same truck and they said it is just the truck, I bought the bad one out of the batch.

Have a 2013 with the same clunk. Just came from the dealer today and he told me that it was normal for the clunk and its not a problem. I say bullcrap. I have a fleet of pest control trucks that do not have this clunk noise. GMC i hope you read this because you have a unsatisfied customer.

Following up

Transmission still 'clunks'/jerks when coming to slow stop at traffic light/stop sign. Has 52K miles on it and it's been clunking from day 1! NOT a smooth transmission at all when it comes to downshifting!

I would be interested to know how you found a New 2011 Truck, that makes it four years old. Just asking

I have an 2011 4x4 with 4.8l 112236 mile and the same exact problem that just started. I just replaced accelerater hopping to fix still the same though going to change TPS next I'll let you know if it works.
