I am looking for a little advice on my Truck. Any help would be great. I will try to keep this short but it is along story.

I purchased my 2013 GMC Sierra 4x4 Z71 with the 5.3L V8 new in 2013. At 18000 miles approx. I had a check engine light and it started to idle rough. Took it to a dealership and they told me the spark plug in cylinder #1 was bad and they replaced it along with some other minor things like changing a valve cover gasket. I thought no big deal and went on.

Almost exactly a year later at 38000 miles The same thing happened only this time the traction control lights and stabilitrac lights were flashing as well. Basically the same answer from a second dealership (this time the one I purchased from). Spark plug in cylinder #1 was fouled and needed to be replaced, on my dime this time. After arguing a little bit and questing why I was now on my third spark plug they dealer said it looked like the plug was fouled on oil and I would do an oil consumption test.

I started that and was told to bring it back when the oil level was below full. Since they over filled it by at lease a quart (cant get them to admit it and didn't take it back immediately so that is my fault) it took until 3000 miles and it was .5 qt. low. I was told to bring it back at the oil change mark and get it checked then.

So 2000 miles later I took it in and was told it was 1.5 qt. low. Which is out of spec as far as I know.

Then I was told I was going about the test all wrong and need to bring it in every 1000 miles to get it tested. So now I get to start all over.

I was also told I needed at least 5 times of it being low to prove to GM it is an issue.

To me 2 fouled plugs in the same cylinder and loosing 1.5 qts over 2000 miles should be more than enough proof there is something wrong but apparently not.

My question is what should my next step be? Do I say screw it and by buy a new truck or keep fighting and hope that at some point they will fix it?

Just putting this out there for info, not saying this is your problem

# PIP5163A: Alleged Cylinders Out Of Round - (Jul 17, 2014)
Subject: Alleged Cylinders Out Of Round

Models: 2015 and Prior GM Passenger Cars and Trucks

This PI was superseded to update Model Years. Please discard PIP5163.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern

Suspecting an engine block of possible cylinder bore damage, scoring or out of round as the possible cause of engine oil consumption, misfire, cylinder leakage or blow by.
Note : GM has not had an issue with cylinders being machined out of round for any engine family in recent history.

The peak to valley spec for crosshatch is .65-2.8 microns. Any deviation and the crosshatch will be gone.

Even if a cylinder is suspected of being oversize we can only confirm that by checking with an air gage at the engine plant.

Recommendation/Instructions

When inspecting the engine block to determine if the cylinder bores are good, Look for the following:

1.

Cylinder damage or scoring- the cylinder walls will contain grooves deep enough to catch with a finger nail.

2.

An out of round cylinder bore- will contain areas where the cross hatch is missing or worn from different section of the cylinder bore. If there is crosshatch all the way around the bore from top to bottom the cylinder bore is not out of round.

3.

Dirt intrusion- If the filtering system has been compromised the engine will wear out very quickly. You will find grit in the intake Runners and the cylinder bores will look lightly sand blasted. The crosshatch will be faint and there will not be sharpness. At high mileage this should be an insurance claim if the air filtering system has been opened numerous times for service in dusty climates.

4.

Catalytic Converter failure- If a converter fails and the brick is broken, the dust can be drawn back into the engine. A block showing this type of failure, will have bores that look to be sand blasted. Back cylinders go first if caught early. Otherwise there will be no Crosshatch and the engine will need to be replaced.

Anthony, just wondering if you've heard any more on this? You just described the problem I'm having with my 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L V8 to a TEE. Last August I brought the truck into the dealership and they told me it was due for plugs and wires and that was the reason for the rough idle. So I changed out the plugs and found a broken one in cylinder 1. I brought it back to the dealership a 3-4 months later because the truck was 1.5 quarts low on oil (that seems like way too much lost). The dealership told me that the valve cover gasket is most likely why the oil is being lost.

Everything seemed fine for now one year, and just this morning on my way into work the car starts idling rough and the check engine light starts flashing and the stabilitrak and traction control warnings come up. I brought it back to the shop (non-dealer) and they told me the oil was 1.5 quarts low, the plug in cylinder 1 was broken, and the valve cover gasket was OK.

Did you find that your engine block was out of round like the other user suggested? Any other findings?

I'd appreciate any help or advice you or anyone else can give me.

Just came across this info from http://www.autoserviceprofessional.com/article/93079/pcv-killing-spark-plugs

"This TSB applies to 2007-2011 Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV/Escalade EXT, 2007-2011 Chevy Avalanche/Express/Silverado 1500/Suburban and Tahoe, and 2007-2011 GMC Savana/Sierra 1500/Sierra Denali/Yukon/Yukon XL/Yukon Denali and Yukon Denali XL, all equipped with the Gen 4 V8 engine.

Some customers may comment on a service-engine-soon light being on and/or a rough running engine. Technicians may find DTC P0300 set. Upon further investigation, technicians may find cylinder #1 and #7 spark plugs oil fouled and/or the porcelain may be cracked or broken on the combustion chamber side.

This occurs on the left side of the engine due to PCV pullover that adds additional oil to the cylinders that can foul out or damage the spark plugs.

Install a new left valve cover with the revised baffle to prevent PCV pullover.

Me to fouled number one plug heavy carbon build up 52,000 miles . The engines are junk. 2 quarts of oil every 5,000

No fouling but uses oil and is noisy. Knock when cold which gets quieter with warm up. I will never buy another GM piece of crap

Having same issues with my 2012 GMC Sierra 5.3 . Had it the whole time I owned it, Next truck will be anything but a GMC or Chevy. But this product since I was 17 years old, now 59. Products went to shit
