I purchased a 2016 Acadia Denali this February, I contacted the salesperson shortly after discovering that the software supporting the navigation system is dated 2013Q2, he pointed me to a now defunct GM website that told me it was the most current version available. Not happy buying a vehicle with 3 year old software, I wrote to the GMC Customer Assistance Center, a person with a strong accent called and punted me to the dealers Sales Manager who then had the Service Manager call and tell me the same thing.
My guess is that when a updated version is available GM will try to sell it to me.

Is anyone familiar with updating the Navigation software using another source other than GMC?

As a General rule..Most all NAV software providers only update every five years..It would not be cost effective to put out patches for a few new streets added ever year....Chances are you have a GPS app on your phone..use that for the overlaps;)

Depends, the largest OEM NAV software company (NavTeq) update their software every year in September. Costs anywhere from $100 tp $200 to update at the dealer.
