Hi everyone, I recently became the new owner of a 97 Sonoma ls, reg cab/box 2wd with a 2.2-4l60e. Sounds like the frony pipe is leaking at/near manifold. It also looks like it has a 6" flexible fabric piece a couple inches down from flange? what's that all about? Maybe this is the cause of the leak? These aren't known for cracked manifolds are they?

Oh does the flange break on these? I was thinking maybe that flex pipe piece of it??

my sonoma the flange is broken and it sounds like a manifold leak. check your hangers to if they are broken they cause the flange to brake

I got a new front pipe and gaskets, now just waiting to install it as soon as it warms up a little...

I got a new front pipe and gaskets, now just waiting to install it as soon as it warms up a little...read the flex part is often the culprit....

UhOh...today I attempted to unbolt front pipe to converter flange and 1st stud/nut attempt broke:( Are those studs replaceable? I used pb and the studs looked freakin brand new clean...

I've noticed we three are having common problems.. My exhaust system snapped yesterday after having a minor exhaust leak for about two weeks. What I noticed on mine is that the exhaust piping between the exhaust manifold and the cat seemed to have cracked right at the crimp bend in the piping. I hit one good pot hole, and the crack ripped right off. It would appear that the crimps in our exhaust system rust out pretty easy, and crack. My suggestion to you guys is to replace your OE exhaust with a mandrel bent piping to prevent a constant breakage right at the crimped areas.

We are having quite a bit of common problems. My exhaust started off as just a minor leak as well. When I inspected the exhaust system, I've noticed that where the factory crimps bends in the piping, those crimped areas are rusting out and starting to crack. The crimp bend just before the flange to the cat was cracked for a while, and then a pothole took its toll and snapped my exhaust in two right at the crack.

My suggestion is to do what I did. I ripped out my factory exhaust system, and replaced all the piping with mandrel bent piping, then put my OE parts back on that. I've had no problems so far, and it's even boosted my performance just a hair.

A flex pipe on a rear wheel drive vehicle? I have never seen it. Flex pipes are used for front wheel drive cars with transvers mounted engines because of the way they move. I looked at some diagrams from you trucks exhaust system and there was a down pipe cat mid pipe muffler and tail pipe...
