I was using 4 wheel high on a snow covered road last week and everything seemed to be fine minus a low whine sound coming from front end. When I got to clear pavement at about 45 mph the front end made a clunking noise 2 times and at that point I pulled over and at a low speed put it back into 2 wheel without any issues. Can anyone tell me what might be the problem?

Could just be the 4wd system binding, common to happen when 4wd is driven on dry pavement unless you have a awd transfer-case. ;)

just curious where did you get the awd transfer case.....still exploring my non working 4wd options

You get the AWD transfer-case from a Astor/Safari van or Bravada. The transfer case your looking for is a the Borg Warner BW4472 it a chain drive all wheel drive (AWD) transfer-case. I picked mine up at the salvage yard from a 1996 Safari also for around $150.00 with warranty and all i did was run the front vacuum actuator straight off the vacuum line.;)

Works great, the other thing you can do which is much easier and less expensive is to replace your rear end with a close rear end. (Posi track)
Best would be Salvage Yard again for about $150.00 also, the Pro code to the Posi Track is G80. ;)

Good luck and keep us posted.

if i go this route will that transfer case bolt right up or do i then need to start fabricating stuff to make it work ?

The Borg Warner BW4472 transfer case bolts right up to transmission like the one you have. The other thing you need to make sure is the yoke will mate up to the transfer-case with your drive shaft. Our Jimmy's came with a few variations of drive shafts and prop shafts, but it's just a simple matching up to your stock drive shaft.

Mine just bolted right up without any issues, Note: our Jimmy's also did come as an option to have a AWD system. You can go to the GM dealer parts department for the matching parts list for the AWD options.

Good luck and hope this helps.;)

Thanks for all the info.....you have been very helpful....hoping to fix the existing system but its nice to know awe is an option as this is a winter vehicle for me

The other options you have is to manually lock up your transfer-case in the 4hi position and buy or make one of these to manually engage and disengage your front axle. http://www.baseline4x4.com/proddetail.asp?prod=PSL500

This would be the cheapest and easiest way to get your 4wd to active and deactivate. I am sure you can get most of the parts at Canadian Tire or Parts Sour. By using items like a hood cable repair kit or even something like a parking brake ratchet leaver you can get from a Salvage Yard.

Just think of the things your going to need and make a list and enjoy the project your about to take. This way you can keep driving your Jimmy in 2wd with the transfer-case in 4hi and when you need 4wd in slippery and deep snow. Just pull and lock the cable to lock up the front axle to get your jimmy in 4wd. ;)

Good luck and keep us posted.

if you havnt got an answer yet try replacing the ujoints on the front drive shaft, mine did the same thing and when i pulled one end down the rollers inside the cap on the ujoint were all ground up and the ujoint started chipping away. if that dosnt fix it then get someone to check transfer case oil. if yours is the same as mine it would be the same as transmission and conected all in one. let me know what was wrong as im curious.

my issue is totally different. the electric switch on my dash and or the various other control peices in between the switch and the transfer case are not telling mine to go into 4hi or 4 lo
