What is the easiest way to ID the diesel engine in my 1993 GMC Sierra K2500.
I thought I had a 6.2 until I had a trans fluid leak from the hole in the bell housing. My repair manual says the 6.2 you remove the oil pan and bearing cap and on the 6.5 you remove the tranny & flywheel. I know it has to do with a 2pc vrs. a 1pc seal, but when I asked for a seal for a 6.2 J diesel at Auto Zone , which I ID'd from the VIN, they give me a 1piece. I have seperated the tranny and removed the flexplate and I do have a 1 piece seal. Skip to the last paragraph now if your not interest in my life history.
I just recently got in to auto repair work as a hobby after I retired from construction and this is my 1st rear main seal job. I'm working alone with my only advise being from my repair manual and forums, searching post topics and occasionally posting a question when I get stumped. I'm totally amazed at how much I've been able to do with no prior experience. I attribute this to the forums as I am usually confused by my manual. I'm so impressed with the forums I'm considering going in to brain surgery next. Are their doctor forums? That's tounge-n-cheek, but I do feel like I could do anything with the internet and forums. I am using an auto paint forum, an auto upholtery forum and a boat forum. I knew the power of the computer and the internet from working in construction, but until I started working on cars I never knew the power of the forum. Forty year in construction and I never used a forum. Maybe thats why I retired, I've been blaming it on Obama and his failure to bring the economy back. NAA!, it was Obama. Thats right I'm a Conservative.
I have plenty to work on since I rarely traded my cars. I have a 84 trans-am, bought new, a 95 Z-71 bought new, a 94 Legend bought new, a 93GMC seirra, bought with 34000 miles in 2006, a 1971 boston whaler, and a 1980 bow rider. All running but at some stage of repair.
Sorry for the long post. Appreciate any help.
