Hello all, I was wondering if it can be done or not. Ive goggled the heck out of this question and got no where. I was wondering if you can convert the EDI to an HEI Distributor....?( Two wire hookup )Basically getting ride of the computer. I know this will interfere with the transmission's lockup and some other stuff but that doesn't bother me none. I would like to go back to the old carb set up. I have found the intake manifold the carb but now I need to know what Distributor can be used. I just what it simple. Im getting tired of this and that going wrong. Talking about all the electrical things

1996 GMC Jimmy 4x4 4dr 4.3L V6 , Engine code ( W )

Oh I think I said that wrong ....My bad , maybe its not EDI dang not sure now im getting confused here....lol I just need to know if the pre 96 (Like the 95 vortec's or so called vortec's) Hei dizzy's will work in the true vortec engines like the 1996 vortec ??? I mean is the rotating assembly really different. I know that all the vortec's have a firing order of 1-6-5-4-3-2 even fire, So if that being the case here then the 1995 vortec Hei out of a Carb engine should work fine, Unless there was a change in the rotating assembly and that making the Distributor not compatible. I know they change the engine in 96 and redesigned it and putting the true vortec heads on it but didnt think they changed the was it fire's if im wrong then please correct me. I would like to get ride of the computer and just go back to the good old setup and not worry about the dang electronics going bad year after year. And I dont have any emission law's were I live so I dont have to worry abut that. So if any one know's......If the 1995 vortec HEI distributor's will work in the 1996 vortec engine's???.....Any One......

WOW Really no one........lol

Sorry i been busy out on tour, before you wrap your brain with the conversion. Check with your state if there are any restrictions about converting your FI engine back to a carb engine.

Most places will not grant the permission unless your converting it in to a off road or farm vehicle use only. When you have to go in for your e test, your jimmy has to pass the e test for the year and make of your jimmy.

Good luck and there are kits out in the market to do the conversion if you like and swap out the transmission for a 700R4 which is the same as the 4L60E without the need for the TCM.

Ok so I got the manifold and carburetor installed and used the original EDI distributor. The original manifold distributor mounting hole is straight across to the no#6 cylinder and the mounting hole on the edelbrock manifold is more to the front of the engine ( About a 45*) or (1-inch apart) I had to make a bracket to install the dizzy in its right place because it is a none adjustable one from factory. So it must go on the same way (Straight across) Once I got this done the Engine runs (idles) Like a champ. But it will backfire when you step down on the accelerator. The only thing I can think of right off the top of my head is that the computer cant adjust the timing because it doesn't no were to set it, due to half of the sensors not being plunged in and the injectors not even being present. So Im going to tinker with it some more and see if I cant readjust the dizzy a little more to fine tune it, If not I'll be getting the dizzy for an early model 4.3L V-6 and see if that don't fix the problem.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm wondering about doing the same thing for the same reason and also to test propane conversion kit. Since I got the motor minus a thing or two I rather make it work. Give me what you can on how you're progressing with it cuz I know less than you already.
