Hello,
I have a question about my 96 GMC Jimmy's Transfer case.

The problem is when I am driving down the road in 2wd it will begin to make a wining noise. if I pull over and shift it into 4wd, then immediately back to 2wd the wining stops......until it begins again approximately 60 miles give or take later.

I have been researching this problem and have found that is has happened to other Jimmy owners. There problem seemed to be the encoder motor. I am unsure if my Jimmy even has an encoder motor, since in 96 it was not push button but was an actual shifter.

So my question is:

Does my truck have an encoder motor?
If so is this the problem?
What do you think is the solution to my problem?

Thank you in advance for any help you may provide.

Phil

Start with the simple and inspect the vacuum switch on top of the transfer-case. It's located on the top of the transfer-case, drivers side. When the vacuum switch goes bad, it tends to engage the front axle or stay's engaged if you used the 4wd. Yes you do have an encoder motor to engage the 4wd system in the transfer-case, but that is electronically controlled. If you like you can pull the fuse for your 4wd system and that would no engage the transfer-case encoder motor and if your still having the issue, it's not your encoder motor but your vacuum switch. Good luck and keep me posted. :D
