'97 1500 4x4 trouble

my buddy has a '97 1500 4x4 on the floor shift, he said he could hear 4x4 engaging before ( slight grind and then boom, 4x4 worked), no he has no 4 high or low, i have been reading about the actuator on the front diff, could that be the problem? It sounds like a common problem.

Start in that direction after you check the 4wd fuse. If fuse is good, check the wire lead to the actuator to make sure there is 12 volts when 4wd engaged.

If there is power you can disconnect the actuator and see if it's moving and replace if it's bad with the new updated actuator.
