My husband has a 98 GMC Jimmy. The other day it died on him. It wouldn't start back up. We had someone pull him home. He thought maybe it could be the alternator. He charged his battery up and instead of clicking like it had been doing, it started. Once it started it has this knocking sound in the engine and a horrible metal squealing type sound. Any ideas on what the problem could be and what kind of expense we could be looking at? This has been a wonderful vehicle with minimum problems. It has close to 150000 miles on it. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. My husband can fix alot of things on this car, but engines are not his forte.

bad belt or pully could cause the noise and eventually a bad charging system lead to a no start.

I know he took one of the belts off and when he started the car, it sounded exactly the same :(

Sorry to hear that

Well let me start by saying your very lucky to have had good luck so far! I am positive that you have the (w) code 4.3 v-6 in your truck! Have you checked your oil for a white milky color? If so and its white an intake gasket has failed you and you may be in need for rod bearings the reason I know this is because I bought a 1998 Gmc Jimmy Envoy back in october of 2010 and I had to replace the engine because that is what happend to my truck. Next thing I would check is for a bad timing chain. And last but not least check the transmission bell housing bolts or the torque converter bolts to make sure they are tight! Hope that i was some help to you!:D

4.3 replace or swap

I just bought a 1998 Jimmy SLE 4x4 and it has a bad motor. Could be a cracked crankshaft or a busted rod, not sure. I'm considering weather to rebuild the 4.3 that is in the vehicle, get a rebuilt 4.3 or replace with a 350. I welcome all opinions and comments. If you have experience with any of these options, I would like to hear them. Thanks in advance.
