I have a 99' Sierra 5.3L, A/T, ex cab..ect..ect.. I have noticed an oil leak but not 100% sure where it's coming from. I have cleaned the bottom of the oil pan and that general area off. I start truck and see oil slowly coming from the area of the starter and see it running down. I also notice a ticking sound coming from the same general area, sounds like it's behind the plastic covering over the fly wheel right next to the starter. The oil is not coming from the valve cover or any higher up then the starter area. Where could the oil be coming out of the motor? What is the ticking noise I hear? Thank you.

What color is the oil, Red, it's your transmission oil and the oil lines run on the passenger side by the starter. Oil line runs on the driver's side and will be black, if the oil is black, you could have a bad rear main seal or if it's red a bad oil seal from your front pump on the transmission.

Post me back, be happy to help you out repair your oil leak.

It is motor oil. I just don't see where it is coming from. I am more worried about the ticking sound I am hearing. It sounds like it's coming from the flywheel. What could this be?

If it's around that area, your flex plate could be cracked that is making the ticking noise and the oil could be from a bad rear main seal.

Here is a link to the parts that is in that area.

So does the tranny need to be removed to do the flexpate and RMS?

Yes it does, best place to have that repair done is a transmission shop. A transmission shop is more experienced in the removal of the transmission and they can replace the flex plate and rear main seal at the same time.

Most transmission shop can inspect that issue your having free of charge, since your giving them your business and you know it's going to get done right and with warranty for the job done. :D

Good luck and keep me posted on what the shop has found to be the issue.
