Another Brand New 500 Mile Rusty Truck

So I purchased this truck less than a month ago and went to go do my first wash and noticed chrome stained in tiny little rust spots. I clay bared the chrome to try and remove these spots but the spots are stained into the chrome. I took it to the dealer and told me that it looked like rail dust. I then went ahead and looked elsewhere and found it on the hood as well. The guy I spoke to at my dealer said the service manager wasn't there due to him having a baby, that I should come back next week. Well now that I found these other spots on the paint, I'm a little more fired up now. My truck is a dark grey, so you cant see them in the paint unless you are really close, but they are there. I don't want to deal with a rotten truck in 5 years with a huge payment.

Is there anyone on here that can investigate these issues? Does anyone from GM post or look at these forums?

I love the truck, but want this taken care of on their dime. The truck has 500 miles on it and there is rust spots already stained on the grill and bumper. Unacceptable.

RAIL DUST

Small rust colored bumps or specks in the surface of the paint film.

CAUSE

When vehicles are transported from the manufacturer by rail, iron dust particles created by friction between train wheels and the track settle on the finish. When exposed to oxygen and moisture, this dust corrodes and become embedded in the finish.

REPAIR
•Use a 30x magnifying glass to verify the presence of rail dust damage. Use caution when accessing damage to prevent scratching the paint surface.

•Wash the vehicle with soap and water, rinse and dry.

•Solvent clean with appropriate surface cleaner.

•Use an acid based rail dust remover following manufacturer's directions.

•Rinse with cold water then inspect the affected area to see if all particles have been removed. Repeat step #3 if necessary.

•If the finish is pitted, sand with 1200 or finer grit sandpaper to remove damage, then compound and polish to restore gloss.*

•Or, sand and refinish.

PREVENTION

Unfortunately, since this type of damage usually occurs during shipment or storage, little can be done to prevent its occurrence.


* When sanding and buffing a basecoat/clearcoat finish, a minimum film thickness of the clearcoat (2 mils) is required to maintain adequate ultraviolet protection. If correcting the damage will result in removing more than .5 mils, refinishing is recommended.

Thanks, Ive read this. Once the dealer does what they are going to do, I have a friend the details cars for a living. He uses iron x when removing rail dust and says it works great. Im going to have him do the entire truck after the dealer does their thing.

What you are saying is that basically every car has some kind of rail dust or contaminant on the finish. Not much you can do besides maintain your finish.
 
I had a white 92 Silverado that had this and it bugged me. Now I just do not look closely at the paint anymore. Besides all the salt the DOT dumps on our highways in the winters, this is the lease thing we have to worry about up here. Also, I worked with a fella that bought a brand new 1993 F150 PU, his truck was white and he went around to several Furd dealers complaining about this rust and they did not know what is was at the time.

What you might want to consider once you have it all cleaned is taking it to a place like Auto Armor who apply paint sealant and they offer a paint warranty. Of course you don't want to mention the rail dust as that might make them apprehensive. Thats what I do to my vehicles now and I never wax them (not supposed to with Auto Armor). I have been very happy with the quality of the paint sealant, take it back every spring and for $65 they use a cleaner and refresh to paint protection (not required but it enhances the look).

My CTS4 is going on 4 yrs and looks as good as the day I drove it off the showroom floor. I have never waxed it, never hand wash it because of the premium $995 paint finish (has heavy pearl metallic and changes color with the light), only go thru the touchless car washes when dirty and it comes clean as if I hand washed it.


This is my '09 CTS4 taken recently, never have I waxed or polished this car, only Auto Armor paint protection and touchless car washes.
